What’s your role at KWL?

I’m responsible for the operation of the company’s fleet workshop facility based at Stockholm Road. I work within a team of 25 highly skilled vehicle technicians, 4 workshop supervisors and 6 apprentices.

My role has many facets involving effective delivery of vehicle and plant maintenance and repairs throughout the company’s fleet of over 1500 units, ranging from 26 tonne HGV trucks to JCB excavators and everything in-between.

I’m also principle in providing MOT and compliance testing services in line with national standards and the local authority’s private hire providers. This is conducted through our nominated technicians who are trained to exacting standards, each being a member of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers.

An important aspect of my role involves the implementation, support and promotion of health and safety in the workplace.

 

What qualifications have you achieved?

I’m qualified in CGLI Mechanical Engineering, CGLI Motor Vehicle Technologies, and IOSH, a member of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers and a member of the Society of Operational Engineers.

I’m in the process of applying for IRTE workshop accreditation, which is nationally recognised as an accolade. It will demonstrate compliance and commitment to high vehicle maintenance standards to our customers, and will show the KWL’s commitment to its technical resource, inviting the participating technicians to take ownership of their vital roles.

 

What do you enjoy the most about working at KWL?

I enjoy functioning with a team of capable and dynamic people in achieving the seemingly impossible. I admire the can-do, will-do attitude and a pragmatic approach to difficult and challenging situations.

I take pleasure in working towards clear goals and appreciate the efforts made by my colleagues, and in particular the clear support in all areas of fleet shown by my extended colleagues and friends in other areas of KWL.

Definitely one of the most rewarding aspects in my position is seeing individuals develop and progress within their roles, particularly with qualification and promotion.

 

What advice would you give to young people who want a job like yours?

It’s not always easy to step back and take an objective view of change or unpopular management decisions, but a stable and rational consideration of what’s being proposed is essential in my opinion.

Listen to guidance but, above all, do as you’re asked with enthusiasm and to the best of your ability.
