What’s your role at KWL?
I work in the Procurement team as a Senior Buyer.
My day-to-day role varies but my primary goal is to achieve value for money for Kingstown Works and our client either through cost or efficiency savings.
I’m responsible for conducting tender exercises and putting contracts in place for a variety of products and services of varying budgets. This has included high-risk capital schemes as well as our key suppliers and sub-contractors.
There is also a category management element within my role. I oversee a number of large contracts including for electrical parts supply, electrical and gas sub-contractors and KWL Fleet tyres. This involves monitoring their Key Performance Indicators and resolving any issue which KWL stakeholders may have following the award of the contract.
I enjoy evaluating the tenders and working with new and existing suppliers and sub-contractors to build up and develop working relationships. I enjoy putting new processes and procedures in place to save the organisation money either through cost or efficiency savings. I also enjoy motivating the rest of the procurement team and guiding us to meet our targets and goals.
What do you enjoy the most about working at KWL?
The people and the relationships I’ve built up while working here. Everyone is friendly and willing to help each other out when needed.
What qualifications have you achieved?
With the full support of KWL, I have obtained my professional procurement qualifications and I am a full member of MCIP.
What advice would you give to young people who want a job like yours?
Carry out a work placement within a procurement team to see what the role involves. And get as much hands-on experience as possible, starting as a procurement apprentice or assistant buyer and working your way up the team.
Although it will take a number of years, I’d also highly recommend studying towards MCIPs .
